| Body Mass Index, or BMI, is a tool for indicating weight status in adults. It is a measure of weight for height. For adults over 20 years old, BMI falls into one of these categories: |
 |
| Below 18.5 |
Underweight |
| 18.5 - 24.9 |
Normal |
| 25.0 - 29.9 |
Overweight |
| 30.0 and Above |
Obese |
|
|
BMI is an approximation of body fat percentage (adipose tissue)
using a height versus weight calculation. It is not an absolute calculation as body
compositions can vary between different individuals. The BMI calculator relies
on average body compositions to make the calculation and therefore the values can be
misleading for some individuals. As an example, BMI is not accurate with extremely
muscular bodies as muscle is much heavier than fat and throws the calculation off.
If your body is of typical makeup for your weight, then BMI can be a very accurate calculation.
